“All American” premieres Wednesday, October 10 on W Network, and follows a football player from South L.A. recruited to play at Beverly Hills High School. Daniel Ezra plays Spencer James, a character inspired by real-life linebacker Spencer Paysinger, who spent on to play in the NFL, winning the Super Bowl XLVI with the New York Giants. Paysinger is an executive consultant for the show.
Taye Diggs is the coach who recruits James, helping the young player as he struggles to balance balance two very different worlds; the often-rough world of Crenshaw, and the privileges of Beverly Hills.
I spoke with Daniel Ezra about playing a real-life character, his preparation for the role and the authenticity that the series strives for:
