On Wednesday at a postal centre in Mexico, a security dog indicated that there was something suspicious about this blue plastic tub, sent by express mail:
Inside, authorities found a sedated Bengal tiger cub. It was somewhat dehydrated but well enough to be a little feisty when they removed it:
Suspected animal traffickers had apparently put the cub inside the plastic tub, with some holes drilled for ventilation. No one realized it was there until the dog indicated something unusual inside the package, which had been addressed to the central state of Queretaro.
Even more shocking, the cub’s paperwork was in order – but it was seized because mailing a live animal in this way constitutes mistreatment.
The cub is now in the care of an animal management centre and the case is being investigated.
